One of the most rewarding moments for a dog owner is watching their dog enjoy the freedom to explore off leash while remaining connected and responsive. For many people, this is the ultimate goal of training. Unfortunately, freedom is often given before it has been earned.

If we want to become fluent with our dogs, we must understand not only the “language” of training—but also the culture of how dogs communicate and perceive the world. Understanding canine communication helps prevent miscommunication between dogs and humans.

Love alone is not enough. Rules alone are not enough. A balanced approach builds trust, confidence, and freedom. When dogs know the rules, they relax.
